What Is Invisalign Teen?

Invisalign Teen is a clear aligner system designed specifically for teens who want to straighten their teeth without the noticeable appearance of metal braces. Made from clear, smooth plastic, these virtually invisible aligners are an ideal choice for teens concerned about their appearance.

Invisalign for Teens Process

The journey to a straighter smile begins with a consultation at Fountain City Smiles. During this visit, Dr. Niral Patel will evaluate your teen’s teeth to determine if Invisalign is the right treatment option.

If Invisalign Teen is the right fit, we’ll create a customized treatment plan using advanced 3D computer imaging technology. This allows us to map out the entire process, from the current position of your teen’s teeth to the final desired outcome. Your teen will even be able to preview the anticipated results before starting treatment.

The clear aligners need to be worn for at least 22 hours per day and only removed for eating, drinking (anything other than water), and oral hygiene routines like brushing and flossing.

What Does Invisalign Teen Correct?

Depending on the severity of the orthodontic issue, Invisalign for teens can correct the following:

  • Tooth Crowding: When there isn’t enough space in the jaw, Invisalign can gently move teeth into proper alignment.
  • Tooth Gaps: Whether due to missing teeth or extra space, Invisalign can help close these gaps.
  • Overbite: Invisalign can correct cases where the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth. This is often due to genetics, bad oral habits, or overdevelopment of the bone that supports the teeth.
  • Underbite: This occurs when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth. It’s usually caused by undergrowth of the upper jaw, overgrowth of the lower jaw, or both. It can also be caused by missing upper teeth.
  • Crossbite: Invisalign can correct misaligned jaws that cause some upper teeth to bite inside the lower teeth.
  • Open Bite: When teeth don’t make contact as they should, Invisalign can guide them into proper alignment.

Pros vs. Cons of Invisalign Teen

As with any treatment option, Invisalign for teens has its pros and cons.

Pros

  • Virtually invisible aligners are ideal for image-conscious teens.
  • Aligners are removable, making it easier to eat, brush, and floss.
  • Treatment time may be shorter compared to traditional braces.
  • No metal brackets or wires mean less discomfort and fewer emergency visits.

Cons

  • Aligners must be worn for 22 hours daily, which requires commitment.
  • Not all orthodontic issues can be treated with Invisalign Teen.
  • Invisalign may be more expensive than traditional braces.

Caring for Clear Aligners

Proper care and maintenance of clear aligners are crucial to the success of the treatment. It’s also necessary to ensure good oral hygiene. Here are some key care tips for your clear aligners:

  • Cleaning the Aligners: Clean the aligners daily with lukewarm water and a soft toothbrush with mild soap. Avoid hot water, colored, or scented soaps that can damage or discolor the aligners. Invisalign also offers cleaning products specifically designed for their aligners.
  • Storing the Aligners: Always store aligners in their case when not in use to prevent damage or loss. Avoid wrapping them in napkins, as they can easily be discarded.
  • Handling the Aligners: Remove and replace aligners using gentle, steady force. Start from the molars and work forward to avoid damage.
  • Scheduled Changes: Follow the orthodontist’s schedule for changing aligners, usually every one to two weeks, to ensure teeth move at the correct pace.
  • Regular Check-Ups: Attend regular check-ups every four to six weeks to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments.
